Letting Go

by Nola on June 20, 2011

A few days after the March 25th announcement of the Golden Heart® Finalists, I tracked down the new yahoo group that had been formed and began sharing posts with fellow finalists. Those first few weeks were certainly exciting as we all got acquainted and shared stories of luck and determination. Even though I knew I couldn’t make the trip to the RWA National Convention in late June, for me being a finalist was mostly about furthering my writing career, not schmoozing. (Though being good at schmoozing can certainly further one’s career.) So it didn’t bother me much when the ladies started talking less about their hopes for their stories and more about their gown and plane reservations.

As time has gone on though, the majority of the conversation has been about going to New York. I admit I have deleted many posts without reading them, based on the topic on the subject line. It’s not sour grapes, I swear. It’s just that there’s no point in getting involved in discussions about dinner reservations, name badges, tourist destinations and so on.

But I do have to admit something. Two days ago I received a beautiful engraved invitation From Romance Writers of America to the Golden Heart Finalists Reception at the Times Square Marriott. As I read the words, it really sunk in what I had achieved. It is no small thing — in the world of romance writing — to be a GH Finalist. At the same time, I was surprised to find myself awash with true disappointment that I would not get my two seconds in the spotlight in New York next week.  I understand that quite a fuss gets made over that lucky group of writers.

I guess this means I’ll just have to final again next year, and hope that finances allow me to make the trip to the convention in Anaheim. Meanwhile, I’m going to frame my lovely invitation. And on the night of the reception I’ll treat myself to a glass of my favorite wine.
