Getting Real, Having Fun

by Nola on June 8, 2011

It’s been a little over a month since I last posted here. I had to get real with myself and admit that the frantic rewrite of my Golden Heart finalist manuscript — The Tycoon and the Nature Girl — was simply not working. I had a lot of good ideas, but none of them were coming together very well. I was trying first to write a commercially appealing story, instead of writing a story first from the heart, and I was trying to stuff it all in the period before the RWA national convention at the end of this month.

It could be that this particular story will never be published. It’s been rewritten and revamped so many times that the only thing recognizable are the first 20 pages and the last five. I may just have to let it go.

So what have I been doing this past month? I’m back “over there”, writing erotica under my pen name. I’m working on a short novel with an IR (interracial) theme that I am really loving, and also just completed a 8600 word short story for an anthology submission. I am having fun again, writing from the heart.

The second 60K romance I wrote last year — Ghosts of Dairy Bridge — has begun to call to me again after aging on the shelf for a a few months. I have a few ideas for smoothing rough spots and making the conflict stronger, so after I finish my IR novel, I’ll probably come back “over here” and give that a go.

It does not seem realistic to me that I can continue to write as both authors, market my writing, work full time and run a household. Something will have to give. Eventually I’ll have to choose one identity and give all my attention there, but right now I don’t have a clue which one I will choose.
