Being Mean

by Nola on May 3, 2011

I’ve been thrashing around now for a week or two trying to come up with a stronger premise for my book. Yesterday I read a great article by author Nalini Singh about character development, and about how “being mean” to your characters — that is giving them awful things to work through — will make for a much more interesting story. The article recommends making a list of five things that your hero/heroine would hate to happen to them — and then make them happen.

Folks, this is a stretch for me. I’m a NICE person, a kind person. I don’t dump on others. I wish everyone well. And guess what? That is B-O-R-I-N-G.

It’s clear that I gotta ramp up my dark side, allow “Nasty Nola” out to play a little. It’s a stretch, but I’m going to make it happen. Stay tuned as I stick it to Marshall big time.
